Brick Table “Weather Report” Tangible Multi Touch Interface
Brick is a very cool multi-touch & tangible user interface table created by Jordan Hochenbaum and Owen Vallis, two undergraduate students at California Institute of the Arts. The idea for Brick came out of a conversation between Jordan and Owen, discussing how to sonify data in a way that was both musical and meaningful for the user.
“Weather Report” uses Brick to sonify real-time weather data (surface temperature):
On the screen you see a map of the U.S. showing the current surface temperature (represented by color). As you take the drawing object and draw a path across the map, for example my drive from Chicago to Los Angeles, it triggers sounds that are linked to those geographic locations. The interesting thing is that is also tracking the surface temperature of the areas your a journeying though, and using that data to filter the audio. Once you stop drawing, it will automatically begin looping your path.
At the same time, you can place two other objects on the table and depending on how you rotate them, they will play different sounds (percussion, clicks, pops, field recordings…). Once you find what you like, you stop rotating and they two will automatically begin looping…what you now have is sort of a mini composition. And because the data is being driven by surface temperature, which is updated every hour via the internet, you will constantly be getting new and different results from hour to hour, day to day…month to month…and so forth
"It was minutes later a friend called me and said, “Michael, that one picture is not safe for work!” I was confused. The pictures were all very simple; they were only friends having fun in the foam. My friend replied, “No the one picture of you is SMOKING hot! It is like internet PORN!” I realized he was being silly but why would he say that about this one picture of me?
Later I received quite a few emails from friends telling me how HOT this one picture was and how they were sending it to their other friends. I couldn’t believe it. Why was this one picture getting so much attention?
You see, there were a lot of people drunk and passed out at the foam party. I thought it would be funny, because I do not drink, to take a picture of me passed out in the foam. I said take it quick because I did not want to lie in the bottom with all the dirt for too long. I quickly laid down in the corner of the room, stuck my tongue out and they snapped the picture. It was only about 3 seconds to take this picture.
It was one of the first times in my life where people were calling me sexy. I was use to being called cute, funny, sweet, and even silly but NEVER sexy. I did not ever consider that to be an adjective to describe me. It was something new and it felt good for that day.
This picture still makes me smile remembering how much fun it was to just take a risk and go to the foam party that week. I also think about how a 3 second photo which just happened to catch me in the right angle, with the right look on my face, made me receive so much attention and helped me to be a little more secure with who I was."
"The FOAM PARTY was insane! Great time had by all. And we have posted pix to prove it! DJ Alex Sardis was in the zone keeping the crowd jumping up and down all night! I have also posted some pix from the party at facebook.com/pitben if you want to tag yourself and your friends! You can also comment on all the pix on our Flickr site, flickr.com/pitobx Thanks for having so much fun with us last night! I know the afterparties were great as well. Wish I coulda been there, too! Somebody’s gotta work though, so, see ya next week!"Benjamin Sproul

Despite its sinister name, few American surf towns boast the peace of mind on offer in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Isolated enough to catch your breath, yet ample enough in population to provide an amenable community, this Outer Banks gem embodies an American surfer’s dream settlement (assuming slow pace is a good thing). With the hollow chatter of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and S-Turns within earshot and a glut of lesser-known sandbars waiting patiently, surfers willing to brave relative isolation during the biting winter needn’t look much further than Kill Devil Hills.
Waves
As an East Coast swell magnet, the Outer Banks lean heavier and burlier than their Eastern neighbors. Despite the flat spells, this is about as consistent as the East Coast gets, and when swell does strike, forget about variety—you’re getting barreled. So long as it’s from June to October, you’ll probably be wearing trunks. You might shiver along in your hood and gloves come winter as water temps dip into the low 40s, but, hey, it’s probably flat everywhere else.
Culture
When you drift south of the Mason-Dixon, you’ve indubitably arrived in the South, and Kill Devil Hills is no different. Southern rules apply, which is generally a good thing, as hush puppies, sweet tea, and syrupy salutations pepper the fine home-cooking establishments along the coast. Don’t expect any Broadway glitz or radical fashion statements, unless you consider a trucker hat and overalls to be neo-vintage. People here like things the way they are—and always have been.
Quality of Life
Kill Devil Hills’ pacing bears an uncanny resemblance to its seasons. In the inclement winter, Kill Devil Hills creeps along as a ghost town. A vast majority of residents just half an hour south receive unemployment checks due to the migratory population. Just as spring revives the natural world, so too does it resuscitate the life and economy of the Outer Banks. By summer, the islands bustle with life and warmth, only to settle down and reflect on the momentary gorge during the crisp breath of autumn. The only wildcard in the equation: hurricanes. You never know when a Category Five might seriously change life in this Carolinian treasure.

Is the foam slippery?
No, it has the same viscosity as water. It does not have soap-like qualities.
Will it make the floor wet?
Yes, it has water, and water will make your floor wet. Our solutions are the driest foam in the industry. If
some say that their foam is dry foam, it is untrue. You cannot have foam without water.
Do our foam guests get wet?
They get damp but not soaking wet. It also depends if they sit in the foam vs. stand in the foam.
How long will the foam last?
It all depends on how many people play in the foam. As more people play in the foam, they break the bubbles.
But usually, if foam is untouched, it can last for hours.
At the end of the night, what happens to the foam?
If you let the foam dry out, it will turn to a powder that can be swept up. It does not leave any sticky residue.
Depending on the amount of water and foam you use, you can have left over water on the floor, which can be
mopped up.
Does the foam hurt your eyes or skin?
The foam has hypoallergenic cosmetic grade chemicals that will not hurt your eyes or skin. Our foam solutions
also have a moisturizer for the skin. It is important to note that, if the floors have been cleaned with bleach,
it can react with the foam.
Does the foam hurt the lawn or trees?
All our foam solutions are biodegradable and do no harm any living thing.
